Good first question!  I consulted the book Prairieville USA (p. 128), which points out that the name "Arlington Heights" didn't come along until 1874.  The earliest name for settlements in the area (ca. 1836) was West Wheeling.  In 1854, Asa Dunton made a homestead claim and called the town Bradley after a close friend.  However, another Illinois town had that name, so Mr. Dunton renamed the town Dunton.  In 1874 some real estate developers suggested that the name "Arlington" would be more attractive to new residents.  Again, there was already an "Arlington" in Illinois, so they added "Heights."  While we're 700 feet above sea level, the name apparently had everything to do with the sound of elegance and nothing to do with geography!  A similar account can be found in Chronicle of a Prairie Town (pp. 228-9).  Both books are available at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library.
