Is there a way to search Micro Fiche archives of old newspapers online or does one have to physically go into the library for that?  I assume the AHML still has Micro Fiche machines?

I've got a few answers for you...

We definitely do still have microfilm/fiche readers in our Newspaper & Microfilm room, and we have historical holdings for the following newspapers:

--New York Times:  1900-
--Chicago Tribune:  1864-
--Daily Herald (A.H.):  1926-
--Wall Street Journal:  1960-

There are some other newspapers for which we have more limited runs on film/fiche, such as the Christian Science Monitor (1960-2001--later articles often show up in our article databases).  For specific details, you call the library at 847-392-0100 and ask for the Magazines & Newspapers staff.

As for getting your information online, the Tribune is the only one that has an online historical database to which we subscribe.  We do have a full set of the NY Times index on shelf in our Reference Dept.  Otherwise, you'll have to know at least the approximate date of the article you're looking for in other newspapers.

For the Tribune, the Proquest Historical Chicago Tribune has front-to-back indexing and scanned articles for the Trib from 1849-1984.  You can use it by visiting our "Find Information" page at http://www.ahml.info/find_information.  Go to the "A-Z List" tab to find it by name.  If you're working from home or your office you'll be asked for your Arlington Heights library card number and your last name.

We've also got some sources for more recent articles:

For local stories, you can use the America's Newspapers (Chicagoland Edition), also from the A-Z list, which has varying years' coverage for the Tribune, Daily Herald, Sun Times and Arlington Heights Post, including current articles.

For a more national perspective, you can find full-text of recent NY Times (1995-) and Christian Science Monitor (1997-) articles in the Student Resource Center database.

Of course, the library can try to track down articles from many other newspapers using a national "interlibrary loan" network that lets us request reprints.

Have fun searching...and if you need assistance, just ask us!
